Contents
For the removal of varnishes from polychrome artifacts, the use of organic solvents is instinctively considered. Though aware of the potential impact on health and of the interactions of organic solvents with the binder of the underlying paint layer, they are used because this is the traditional approach.

Aqueous methods, however, can also be effective: complementary to organic solvents and, under certain conditions, even a real, effective alternative to them. The meeting will review the possibilities offered by the aqueous environment in gelled form, for its action at alkaline pH and / or in the presence of surfactants and chelators, and for its ability to emulsify moderate quantities of polar solvents, with or without surfactants.

Paolo Cremonesi is an independent Conservation Scientist, Chemist and Biochemist, trained also in the restoration of paintings, active in research, development and training in several European countries.
